  • London: Day 1

It's Saturday, so no newsroom visits today. Because data costs a fortune over here, I'm going to try to update this blog on hotel WiFi every night rather than throughout the day.

Tomorrow eve I fly to Switzerland with a couple of my UK co-workers for a full day of sales pitches. Bring it on, Zurich!

Meanwhile, a slice of what I saw today...

  • It's only rock'n'roll (but I like it)

When I told my mom I was visiting our London office, she joked that I should hang out with Mick Jagger. Well, turns out our new UK sales manager Paul couldn't use his ticket to see the Stones play in Hyde Park -- obviously not an opportunity I could pass up. They played all their classic stuff, and Mick's outfit changes and high-energy dancing partnered with Keith's badass string-fingering made for quite the show.

  • Mile End: a houseboat concert

My trip hasn't been all business. On the weekend I met up with a coworker in the hip Mile End part of town, and walked through the park along the canal. We stumbled across an awesome houseboat party, with people on the shore watching the band play atop the boat. It was very awesome.

  • Brussels

I spent the day in Belgium with my co-worker Michael. We visited three clients and also met with a freelancer who is interested in contributing to the Scribble Market.

Brussels had outstanding architecture, and even better chocolate. A lot of residents speak french, so I was able to dust off my rickety Canadian french skills (but thankfully Michael stepped in where communication was really important).

Dh.Be is a sports publication and La Libre is a politics paper. Both are owned by the same company and share a newsroom. They were especially excited about Articles, and will use them to begin to transform their static pages into something more dynamic and engaging. They also adored all our new social integration, arriving just in time for them to cover National Day, their yearly celebration of independence: they'll use our new Instagram and Vine integration to add citizen-generated content to their sites.

  • Rome

I had less than 24 hours in Rome, but thankfully I was travelling with my two Italian coworkers who were excellent guides to the city and its media.

The interesting thing about Italian media is that unions have a lot of power in driving business decisions.
There is also a national certification for journalists.

There wasn't much time to do anything outside of client visits, but we took one client out for an amazing pasta lunch so I got my first taste of proper Italian food. A lot of my photos are taken from the taxi as we travel from place to place. We visited two current clients and one potential client that is currently on a trial.

    Gruppo Espresso

Gruppo is a long-time Scribble client and consistently produces some of the best coverage in our network. They are a large media company that owns a popular national publication, Repubblica, as well as many regional papers. Repubblica uses syndication to deliver national coverage to its regional publications. We had a morning meeting with the editorial team who were quite keen on our new integration with Instagram and YouTube, as social is very important to them. They also loved that they will be able to track traffic coming from different locations. In the afternoon we met with the business and marketing team, who were excited by the monetization opportunities other clients have been taking advantage of. They were also impressed by the new Scribble Market and see potential in discovering new client partnerships through content sharing.

    La 7

We also visited a client currently trialing our platform as a second screen experience to their daily current events talk show. Talk shows in Italy tend to be very loud, dramatic and controversial, rather then the usual coffee-and-chatter you see in American talk shows. They want to engage the very active social community around their news shows and drive traffic to their site.

  • Milan

Milan has a completely different vibe than Rome. Everything's a bit cleaner, the buildings are more modern, and the tourism is more focussed on shopping than history. We took a train from Rome and visited three clients here, two of them are brand-new and this was their first visit from ScribbleLive. I also had the largest and most delicious pizza I've ever had -- and anyone who knows my relationship will pizza will know how happy this makes me.

A bit about the client visits...

Sky Italia just signed a contract with us after seeing their UK Sky counterparts produce some amazing journalism. They use it both for sports and news, and plan to launch a second screen experience around the XFactor, a hugely popular music reality show. They have a very small digital team, so their main challenge is engaging their old-school broadcast journalists to start creating dynamic real-time content for the site. Like many newsrooms, some journalists are nervous about new technology and need a lot of convincing to see the value for their readers. They were particularly inspired by the Scribble Daily, and hope to launch an internal Sky Italia Daily both to get their journalists familiar with the platform, provide training and support, and to create an internal social network to evangelize all their digital efforts.

by dana on Jul 19, 2013 at 6:42 AM

Gazetta Dello Sport is similarly a new client. It is part of a bigger media group - RCS Media - and its news counterpart Corelio has used the platform for a long time. Gazetta wanted in on the action, so we gave them their own account. Lillo our Italian platform guru was able to convince them to dedicate more people power to their live coverage to start turning all their static pages into something more dynamic and engaging for readers. The video at the bottom of this post shows Lillo explaining why original content on your site is superior to putting everything onto social media.

Il Sole 24 is Italy's biggest and most popular business publication -- think Wall Street Journal for Italian business folk. It has been our client for a while but due to management switches they needed some fresh ideas to get back into using the platform. Lillo showed off how some other financial-focussed clients are using the platform. They particularly loved the idea of building sponsor partnerships: since they often cover lawyer and bank conferences and events, they figure they could seek sponsorships and create a new revenue stream.
